NEWPORT, R.I. (April 14, 2009) - When it comes to maintaining tradition in the sport of sailing, the New York Yacht Club (NYYC) has it down to a science. From its well-documented ties to the America's Cup to its
history-laden clubhouses - one in Manhattan and the other overlooking Newport Harbor - there is a constant and consistent approach to maintaining vital elements of the world's sailing culture. This spring, from June 12-14, the New York Yacht Club 155th Annual Regatta presented by Rolex ( will deliver the next chapter of the longest-running regatta in America. NYYC first ran the event in 1845, one year after its inception.

In 2008 the event was a draw for the newest and hottest IRC boats to hit the water, and 2009 should see many of those yachts returning to compete alongside boats that will have just finished the biennial Annapolis to
Newport Race. The Annual Regatta starts with the Around-the-Island Race on Friday, June 12, followed by the traditional two-day series of racing on June 13-14. A Skippers Meeting on Friday evening at 1800 has been added to this year's format and will be followed by the prize giving for class winners of the Around-the-Island Race and a slide show presented by Sailors For the Sea to encourage marine conservation and raise awareness of marine environmental issues. Also new this year will be awards for the Best Boat of the Day on each racing circle on Saturday and Sunday as well as for the boat with the most family members onboard.

Entry is open to yachts with a minimum LOA of 25 feet in one of the following categories: IRC (spinnaker), IRC non-spinnaker/NYYC Cruising Rule, PHRF (rating 91-135), Classics, 12 Metre, 6 Metre and One-Designs. Not only is there no entry fee for the Around-the-Island Race, but also special benefits exist for boats entered in either the Leukemia Cup or the Annapolis to Newport Race. Details can be found online in the Notice of Race.

The Annual Regatta is part of US-IRC Gulf Stream Series for IRC yachts ( and also acts as the first leg of the 2009 NYYC Classic Yacht Series (

Later this summer, the New York Yacht Club will host its inaugural NYYC Invitational Cup. Scheduled for September 15-19 in NYYC Club Swan 42s, the event is for Corinthian (amateur) sailors representing their yacht clubs and respective nations.
